The Places You've Been

Dragging you behind by your hand
Is the past you can never forget
Your feet ease up on the burning sand
Nothing hurts more than regret.

Trivial shapes under the street lamp
Barking dogs at the window
Sweating a break in the cold and damp
Why are you scared, its only a scarecrow.

The past will never leave you
Till you decide to leave the past
Once done with it, you should be through
Look back not at the people you have passed.

From the past, the ones who return
Are not the same that you lost
The lesson is for them to learn
Why do you think you have to bear its cost.

But to undermine the now
In favour of the then
Is wrong and it will somehow
Leave you stranded in the end.

All I know that its better
To love the ones who love you
Than to write love letters
To people who don't care about you.

Binding your hopes to them till end
You'll only punish yourself tomorrow
Hold the hands that othes extend
And there will be no more sorrow.
